Wheelchair and Adaptive Athletes
Eugene Marathon includes three categories of wheelchair and adaptive participants:
Push-rim Wheelchair Athletes
Eugene Marathon includes a push-rim wheelchair racing division for athletes with Paralympic classification or eligible impairment as defined by the IPC.
For the safety of all participants, Wheelchair athletes must notify Eugene Marathon organizers (info@eugenemarathon.com) of their intent to participate prior to Marathon Weekend. Push-rim Wheelchair athletes must use a racing wheelchair and wear a helmet at all times while racing. Due to course limitations, Eugene Marathon does not allow handcycles.
Participants in the push-rim wheelchair category are eligible for Wheelchair Category awards. In 2023, Eugene Marathon will provide awards to the top 3 overall athletes in the Wheelchair category but will not provide age-group awards. As participation in the division grows, additional award categories may be added.
Athletes with Impairment
Eugene Marathon welcomes athletes of all abilities and will provide all reasonable accommodations to support and include those with impairments. Athletes with impairments are encouraged to reach out to race organizers prior to registering (info@eugenemarathon.com) in order to discuss appropriate accommodations and logistics.
Athletes with impairments who are not in the Wheelchair Category are included in overall results; there are no separate award categories for other impairments.
Duo Teams
Eugene Marathon welcomes Duo Teams, comprised of an athlete with eligible impairment pushed by an able-bodied athlete in a specialized chair. Duo Teams must contact race organizers (info@eugenemarathon.com) prior to registering. Duo Teams are considered non-competitive and are not eligible for awards.
